“How to clean a mattress” One of the most popular questions we get asked by our clients. From dust, dirt, stains, bed mites and sweat our mattresses are on the receiving end of a lot. The London Cleaning Company knows the importance of a clean mattress, and how it can contribute to a good night’s sleep.

We spend a lot of time in our beds, so it’s only right that they should be as clean as can be.

Check out our top mattress cleaning tips below.

Step 1: How to Prep Your Mattress for Cleaning

Firstly before any type of cleaning takes place, strip your bed and wash all pillow cases, bed sheets, duvets and throw blankets. You should wash your bed sheets once a week on a high temperature to kill any bacteria or dust mites that may be lurking.

While your bed linen is washing in the machine, lets get to the mattress!

Step 2: A Clean Mattress = Hoovering Your Mattress Thoroughly

Hoovering your mattress,  will get rid of any annoying crumbs, dust mites and any pet hair that may have accumulated over time. Most hoovers have a mattress or upholstery attachment, that are ideal for cleaning your mattress.

When hoovering your mattress, always start at the top and move your way down. Moreover, the London Cleaning Company recommends hoovering your mattress horizontally first. Also go over the top in vertical lines to ensure your entire mattress is properly cleaned. (Don’t worry about the other side of the mattress just yet, we’ll get to that a little later).

Step 3: How to Clean Mattress Stains

How you clean your mattress and what you use to clean it will depend on the type of stain you are getting rid of. In other words, stains that have been on your mattress for a long time will be harder to clean. Thankfully, the London Cleaning Company has gotten rid of a few tough stains in our time! As a result of this, we have all the stain removal tips you will ever need to keep your mattress stain-free, and looking brand new.

Start by Spot Cleaning Stains

If you have never cleaned your mattress before, it is likely there will be a few stains that are visible to the naked eye. These stains can be easily treated with a spot clean. Simply combine 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap. Stir together in a bowl and you will create soap suds that are perfect for lifting stains. Use an old toothbrush to apply the solution to the mattress. With a damp cloth, wipe away the excess and you should see the stains disappear. Voila!

Enzyme Cleaner for Tougher Stains

For biological stains (stains caused by bodily fluids), enzyme cleaner is ideal. You simply spray enzyme cleaner onto a clean cloth and gently dab any mattress stains. Ensure you allow the solution to saturate your mattress. Once you have applied the solution to all of your stains, let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, dab the areas with the same cloth to help lift the stain.

Top Tip: Don’t spray cleaning solutions directly onto your mattress as this can be harmful to the material.

Step 4: Remove Odours from Your Mattress with Bicarbonate of Soda

Bicarbonate of soda is such a versatile product, and one of the most effective products to deodorise your mattress. The best thing about it is, its a common household item that can be found in most kitchen cupboards!

Odours can build up over time, and lead to an unpleasant aroma. To get rid of these smells, you simply sprinkle a generous amount of bicarbonate of soda over your and gently rub it in with a scrubbing brush. This will help it penetrate the mattress fabric. You must leave the bicarbonate of soda to sit on your mattress for at least a couple of hours (the longer you leave it on, the better), and work its magic. Doing this will not only absorb odours, but it will also absorb any excess liquids from the stain removal process.

Once it has been left to work for a few hours, hoover the excess baking soda off and enjoy your fresh, clean mattress!

Step 5: Flip the Mattress and Repeat the Above Steps

Once you have completed  all of the steps above, you can flip your mattress over and repeat the steps listed above.

Step 6: Leave your mattress to air

Once you have thoroughly cleaned both sides of your mattress, don’t put your freshly cleaned bed linen on straight away. The London Cleaning Company recommends airing your mattress out. Simply open your windows and air out your bedroom.
